They make it more fun and there used to be an old dtd server that had bots.

NS isn't dead. The reason the past few NS servers have failed is because there were no alien bots. Alien bots are actually smart in NS and provide great gameplay for those wanting to come in. It also means people don't have to sit there and wait for someone else to randomly join to play.
