I'm using a wooden desk for my G5. It works fine, and I'd assume yours would too. Not kidding either.

EDIT: It uses laser tracking too.

well, the problem with my desk is that its worn on the entire right side now where my mouse is, and theres an obvious difference in precision

Yeah, just get a mouse pad for like what 50cents? I use my M$ Sidewinder on a mouse pad and it's just fine.
