Maybe have different classes of geometry (such as in Zombie Master where you have different zombies).
1. A general purpose, weak, cheap, good in large numbers type class could include an assortment of oblong shapes. Basically the equivalent of a shambler.
2. A very large, slow, but devastating mid-range priced opponent somewhat reminiscent of a hulk in ZM could be a large rectangular prism.
3. A sphere could be represented as a fast and hard-hitting yet vulnerable roller-mine type guy. Expensive. The spherical version might also be an evolved form of a less expensive yet less effective egg-shaped dude.
A pyramid could simply be used as some defensive obstacle or something of the like that are mobile and inexpensive.
Another gameplay option could be to have two teams in which each player takes on a general-type role over a large expanse fighting for control of certain stuff. But I think that would be waaaaaaaay more complex than your two ideas which already suit perfectly.
